Efficiency Computer Tips

Free Up Space
-
Monthly
maintenance
is a must.
There are
certain
measures one
should take
on a monthly
basis to
insure a
stable
environment
and free up
space on
their
computer.
While some
of the
following
steps
require
special
software to
complete,
most can be
accomplished
on any
computer.
-
Run an
anti virus
program.
Anti virus
programs are
designed to
detect and
eliminate
programs
that would
damage your
computer.
You may get
a virus
through
e-mail or
downloading
an infected
program.
Recommendations
include AVG
Antivirus or
Norton
Antivirus.
-
Restart
your system.
When you
perform a
restart,
your system
will run
automatic
checks and
empty out
the cache.
This should
be done
every few
days if you
leave your
machine on.
This is also
the first
step before
calling for
technical
support.
-
Check
Windows for
errors.
You probably
already have
some kind of
software to
check
Windows for
errors. If
not, you
might want
to get a
program such
as "Norton
System
Works", or
some similar
product.
Search
CNET.com for
some advice.
Run the
program
accordingly
to check for
system
errors,
registry
errors,
shortcut
errors,
missing
files, etc.
-
Run
defrag.
This will
make more
room on your
computer,
and you can
verify by
checking the
disk space
usage in the
"properties"
window of
your hard
drive (under
"My
Computer),
before and
after the
defrag.
Before you
defrag, make
sure that no
programs are
running.
This means
right
clicking on
all icons in
the taskbar
at the
bottom right
corner of
your screen
and select
"exit," or
"disable,"
etc. to end
and close
the program.
There may
still be
programs
running in
the
background,
so hit "ctrl
- alt -
delete" keys
once to
bring up the
"close
program"
window.
Select each
one and
click the
"end task"
button -- on
all except "systray"
and
"explorer".
These two
are required
for Windows
to run. Now
-- run
defrag
following
these
instructions:
-
double
click on
the "My
Computer"
icon on
your
desktop
-
right
click on
your C
drive
(hard
drive)
and
select
properties
-
select
the
"tools"
tab and
the "defragment
now"
button
-
select a
full
defrag,
which
includes
files
and free
space
-
Don’t put
it off.
Schedule a
date and
time to
delete any
files you
longer need
or use - -
typically
anything you
haven't used
(printed,
edited,
copied, or
sent) is
safe to
delete. If
this process
is going to
take many
hours, try
to schedule
time to do
one folder a
day or week
until you
have deleted
everything
that is old,
outdated,
and unused.
If you want
to clean up
your
computer at
work, first
check to see
if you
employer has
a document
retention
policy in
place. If
they don't
have a
policy,
suggest they
develop one.
If you own
your own
business or
just use
your
computer for
personal
matters, you
should
determine
how long a
document is
kept. If you
are unsure
due to
legalities
or
accounting
reasons,
please seek
the advice
of an
attorney or
accountant
before you
start
